“You know what makes me glad we don’t live in Minneapolis?” Ford asked one night, out of the blue.
“The fact that it’s in Minnesota?” Jubal said, without even looking up from the book he was reading.
Ford rolled his eyes. “Okay, that,” he said, “and the crap that’s going on up there where they’re basically tracking down protesters and assaulting them.”
Jubal looked up in surprise. “You’ve been watching the news?”
“Just so I’m not totally lost every time you start talking,” Ford said.
“Oh.” Jubal just looked at him a moment. Then he said, “I love you.”
Ford smiled and leaned his head on Jubal’s shoulder. “Like I said,” he murmured, “I’m glad we’re not in Minneapolis.”
